4 in 10 Adults in the US Are Vitamin D Deficient

Insufficient levels of Vitamin D can result in frequent sickness and infection, fatigue, pain, bone and hair loss, and slow-healing wounds.

According to a recent study, 41.6% of adults in the US are Vitamin D deficient. Those numbers increase to 69.2% among Hispanics and 82.1% among African Americans. There are several reasons why so many adults are Vitamin D deficient. Lack of sufficient sun exposure is a leading cause.

Why Does Vitamin D Deficiency Matter?

Vitamin D plays a critical role in many of the body’s essential functions, including support for cellular health and our immune system. Insufficient levels of Vitamin D can result in frequent sickness and infection, fatigue, pain, bone and hair loss, and slow-healing wounds.

Additionally, further studies indicate that Vitamin D plays an important role in supporting brain health and wellness. Recent studies have demonstrated a relationship between Vitamin D deficiency and cognitive decline and other brain health issues.

Food Is Rarely a Sufficient Source of Vitamin D

Between wearing sunblock and spending time indoors, most people don't get nearly enough sun exposure for their body to produce vitamin D naturally. If that's you, aim for 1,000 IU of vitamin D per day. Unfortunately, it's hard to get enough vitamin D through food. To get 1,000 IU, you would have to eat four cans of tuna or about seven ounces of salmon per day! Instead, try a vitamin D supplement.

Vitamin D & The Brain

Vitamin D has been shown to offer a number of critical brain and cognitive benefits. For one, vitamin D supports the growth of new brain cells. In animal studies with Alzheimer's modeling, vitamin D was shown to clear the brain of amyloid, a toxic protein that accumulates in the brain and is associated with Alzheimer's disease. Vitamin D supplementation has been shown to protect against neuroinflammation and promote neurogenesis in animal studies. Furthermore, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with memory loss and an elevated dementia risk.

The days are so short this time of the year... plus i'm in the office all the time! So I started taking vitamin d once a day. I definitely think it's helping my mood and I like knowing that I'm getting good nutrients that my body can't make on its own.

I came across an article about all of the BAD things that can happen to your body when you sit in an office all day and don't get any sunlight! (*inching closer to the window*) So, I picked up this Vitamin D supplement. Took one at lunch, along with my regular afternoon Neuro Alert... I don't "feel" anything different right now, but it's good to know I'm getting the nutrients my body needs!
