The first day of Spring is here and as the first buds appear, we enjoy longer days and renewed energy. Many of us are happy to say goodbye to winter, but lets not rush through this transition too quickly. Slow down, appreciate the coming season.
Mindful ways to celebrate and savor Spring:
1-Appreciate your plate. Bowls of soup and cups of hot cocoa may have kept you warm all winter, but Spring means you have the opportunity to enjoy your favorite fruits and vegetables. Fresh greens, sweet peas and bright berries.
More mindful eating does not require mindfulness training. Simply slow down and allow your body and brain to enjoy what is before you. Simply ways to slow down might just include some old fashion table manners, chew slowly or put your utensils down between bites.
Sit down at the table! Put your food on a plate or in a bowl, don’t eat out of containers from your local take out joint, use utensils and eat with others.
Fun Fact: Your brain uses 25% of the calories you consume, make them good for your brain.
2-Get moving. It’s Spring, get outside and move! Walk, 20 minutes a day 4 days a week. Grab your iPods, listen to music that sets you free and simply walk, hike or tend to the yard. Whatever you choose, enjoy yourself.
Add intensity once you have been doing your chosen activity for more than 3 weeks by walking a bit more briskly or increasing distance and time by as little as ten minutes. Small change can make a significant difference.
